Two stay at home days watching the rain gently fall on the garden. Slowly eating all the leftovers in the fridge as we depart east on Saturday towards Norwich. After the clean up, we drove east to the village of Brigstock, to our ‘Swallows B n B’ stay for two nights. On arrival, we noticed a sign for a Beer Festival. Always a good sign. Well, it was all happening on the Village Green next to our BnB.

After hastily dropping the bags, we ventured out to check the scene. It was reminiscent of the early days of Mornington’s Tea Tree Festival, only smaller. A few stalls, some craft tents, hay bales to sit on and a three piece 'band' with a dodgy singer. The Village hall was the place to sample scores of beers and a couple of food trucks provided the usual suspect range of tucker. A cricket match was in full swing on the adjacent oval. A very pleasant and friendly village atmosphere, made all the more interesting by the addition of beer sampling and an array of vintage and veteran cars.

On the recommendation of our host, we walked around the village until we found the Orsini Bistro. New to town, it was the suggested option to pub food. A closer inspection and a glass of rose convinced us to give it a try for dinner.

The menu was typical of a French (sort of) bistro with only a limited selection. Flashy thought it well thought through with a couple of interesting dishes. He chose an eggplant and bean vegetarian cassoulet, which turned out to be very good. Lady P’s cod with Basque pepita sauce was, according to her, average. But she can be hard to please. Flashy engaged the waiter in conversation on the nature of the restaurant and was immediately introduced to the chef owner. A long conversation on the nature of hospitality followed and we departed for home wishing him well for the future.

Our stay at the BnB comes with breakfast in the dining room. A very friendly group of like minded seniors joined us for a cooked and continental breakfast on Sunday morning, which was excellent. The sun is shining and it’s mid 20’s. Well, at least it is at 10 am.

And so it remained most of the day. We drove to the ‘Falcon’ pub about 20 minutes away in Fotheringhay. Here we enjoyed a good old Sunday roast lunch with a giant Yorkshire pud.

  1. Your description of Brigstock sounds like something out of Midsomer Murders, possibly without the murders.
