Our Berlin Greeter Michael, meets us at the Zoo station and we are off on what we think is a two hour, standard Greeter walk. Three hours later, after an informative walk, bus and train around west and east Berlin, he informs us that the tour is only half over. Lady P politely informs him we have an afternoon booked to look at the Jewish memorial so will have to conclude the tour. This is not true, of course, just a ruse to be polite. Not to worry, he says he’ll take us there – he has all day!. Flashy then is a bit more direct and says thanks for the tour - it is now over. We shake hands. He departs and we go straight into the pub outside of which we are standing.
Beers and Spritz revive us and we decide to stay for a late lunch. Luckily,
it is a traditional German menu and Jenny gets a schnitzel the size of a bull’s
bottom, complete with a kilo of fried potato. Flashy has the schwinehaxe (pork
knuckle) with a Berlin size serve of fried potato and Lady P, a delicate meat
ball and potato salad from the snack menu.
After this we need to
walk off lunch, so a walk around more of Berlin, racking up more than 15,000
steps, before a healthy salad and some wine back in the apartment. A good day
to see a lot of Berlin and learn about the wall and unification from someone
who lived through it.
That, my friends is a pork knuckle.
And not too shabby a schnitzel, either.
Lady P helped eat the crackling.
Our salubrious apartment in the leafy suburbs.
Our tree lined, paved street.
Funny pedestrian traffic lights.
